Mercedes-Benz GLA Gets Major Electric Overhaul: Spy Shots Reveal Redesign

Mercedes-Benz is modernizing its entry-level car lineup, and the next step is a significant redesign of the GLA, the brand’s most affordable model in the U.S. Recent spy shots confirm a more streamlined, electric-focused approach. This is part of a broader shift in the industry toward EV dominance, where even entry-level models must offer competitive electric options to stay relevant.

Exterior Overhaul: Aerodynamics and Electric Signals

The prototype spotted during cold-weather testing shows a fully enclosed grille, indicating an electric drivetrain. This isn’t just about aesthetics; enclosed grilles improve aerodynamics, maximizing range in EVs. Unique headlights with the signature Mercedes star are also visible, along with flush-mounted door handles and an upward-sweeping beltline, all pointing to a sleeker profile. The rear has been revised, moving the license plate from the liftgate to the bumper and featuring squared-off taillights with the three-pointed star graphic. The design is evolutionary but clearly signals a move toward modern EV styling.

Interior: Superscreen and Virtual Assistant

Inside, the GLA will adopt elements from the redesigned CLA and GLB. The optional MBUX Superscreen – combining a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, a 14-inch infotainment system, and a separate 14-inch passenger display – will dominate the dashboard. Mercedes’ MBUX Virtual Assistant with a “living avatar” in the form of the brand’s star will also be included. This tech-heavy interior is designed to compete with other premium EVs that emphasize digital experiences.

Powertrain Options: Electric and Hybrid Choices

The GLA will offer both fully electric and hybrid powertrains. The electric variants include the GLA 250+ with a 268 hp rear motor and the GLA 350 4MATIC with a dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing 349 hp. Both are expected to utilize an 85 kWh battery pack with an 800-volt architecture, allowing for up to 320 kW DC fast charging. Initial range estimates suggest around 303 miles, though Mercedes has demonstrated higher ranges in other models like the CLA (493 miles) and GLB (393 miles).

Alongside the EVs, hybrid versions will feature a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a 1.3 kWh battery and an integrated electric motor. These hybrids will deliver between 134 hp and 187 hp, plus an additional 30 hp from the electric motor. This provides a stepping stone for consumers not yet ready for full electrification.

The redesign of the Mercedes-Benz GLA is a clear sign that even entry-level luxury cars are undergoing a major electric transformation. With competitive EV options, updated interiors, and streamlined design, the new GLA is positioned to appeal to a wider range of buyers in the rapidly evolving automotive market.
