Yes, the Cupra Tindaya is coming to the showroom. No more concept car limbo. Markus Haupt, CEO of Seat-Cupra, dropped the bomb on Autocar recently. He said it outright. The car is real.
“It looks fantastic – why should we not put it into production?” he asked. “It’s a promise I can give you: this vehicle will see our streets within the next few years.”
Remember when they told us it was just a tech demo? A design exercise to show off some flair? Well. Plans changed.
The Tindaya isn’t just another SUV. It is meant to sit higher up the food chain. Above the Tavascan. Above the Terramar. Even above the Formentor. This is the flagship.
They want it to brawl with the Germans.
Specifically? The BMW iX3. Maybe the Volvo EX60 too. The goal is to punch up into that premium European SUV slot where the Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLC hold court. Those rivals are going electric fast. Cupra needs a ticket in.
At £60,00 roughly? Sure. That fits right next to the Genesis GV70 or the Lexus RZ. Aggressive pricing for a car with that kind of attitude.
Here is where it gets tricky. The show car? Wild stuff.
- A radical design
- A 489bhp plug-in hybrid range extender
- 4.72 meters of pure intent
But production is different. The hardware will likely be the VW Group’s new SSP platform. Audi is eating first there, so the tech stack is locked. But the engine? Maybe not the loud one we saw in Munich.
Haupt wouldn’t commit to the hybrid powertrain. “The discussions change rapidly,” he admitted. “The platform is settled. But the specific powertrains? Not yet. We keep options open until we are absolutely certain they are right for the customer and the market.”
“We need to ensure we have the right drivetrain for the moment of delivery.”
Why? Because tastes shift. Infrastructure changes. If a full electric version makes more sense by the time the Tindaya launches? They’ll do that. If not? They adapt.
It leaves you wondering what the final soul of this machine will be. The concept was visceral. Sharp. Angry almost. Can the production model keep that spirit intact when stripped down for compliance and cost?
Only time will tell. But at least they aren’t hiding it in the garage anymore.
