Ford Explorer Tremor: Power and Price in the 2026 Model

Ford has replaced the Timberline trim with the 2026 Explorer Tremor, marking the fifth model to receive the “Tremor” off-road treatment following the F-150, Super Duty, Expedition, and Maverick. The new Explorer offers a significant upgrade in power—and cost—with a high-performance V-6 option. Testing in Death Valley confirmed the Tremor delivers on its promise, though buyers will pay a premium for the extra capability.

Engine Options and Performance

The Tremor now includes the Explorer ST’s twin-turbocharged V-6, producing 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. This upgrade comes at an additional $12,000 (plus the mandatory BlueCruise plan) but reduces 0–60 mph times to around 5.2 seconds. For those seeking a more budget-friendly option, the turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-four remains available, delivering 300 horsepower and achieving a 6.0-second 0–60 mph time.

Off-Road Capabilities and Suspension

The Tremor retains the Timberline’s key off-road features, including a Torsen limited-slip differential, 18-inch all-terrain tires, steel skid plates, and an inch of increased ground clearance. The suspension has been tuned for improved handling on both pavement and rough terrain, providing composed and smooth damping. With 8.7 inches of underbody clearance and approach/departure angles of 24.1 and 23.7 degrees respectively, the Tremor proves effective on challenging surfaces. Its rear-based all-wheel-drive setup provides an advantage in uphill climbs, while the suspension minimizes impact during rocky descents.

Drivetrain Quirks and Steering

The Torsen differential, carried over from the Timberline, can struggle when one wheel loses traction. Drivers may need to manually engage the brake to regain grip. Steering remains adequate but lacks precision, a trade-off for added dirt-trail charm. The Explorer’s tech suite, including BlueCruise and adaptive cruise control, assists drivers on and off-road. The front-facing camera (Trail mode) displays a live feed on the central touchscreen, aiding visibility over crests and between obstacles.

Interior and Tech Upgrades

The 2026 Tremor benefits from the Explorer’s 2025 interior facelift, featuring a 13.2-inch landscape-oriented touchscreen and an updated infotainment system. The cabin now includes up to 14 speakers (with the B&O upgrade) and Electric Spice accents on stitching and badging.

Pricing and Value

The 2026 Explorer Tremor starts at $50,160, slightly less than the previous Timberline model. However, the V-6 upgrade package adds $11,850, and buyers must also purchase a BlueCruise subscription ($495 for 15 months or $2495 for seven years). The fully equipped V-6 Tremor exceeds $62,500.

The Tremor offers a compelling blend of power, capability, and modern tech, but the high cost of the V-6 upgrade raises questions about value. The base model provides an affordable entry point, while the top-tier trim caters to buyers who prioritize performance above all else.
