Toyota C-HR+: Electric SUV Sets New Standard for Comfort and Reliability

Toyota has expanded its electric vehicle lineup with the C-HR+, a new all-electric SUV that builds on the popular C-HR name while offering distinct advantages in space, range, and long-term ownership confidence.
The C-HR+ uses the same platform as Toyota’s bZ4X, providing a mid-size SUV experience with a more competitive price point and improved interior dimensions.

Key Specifications and Trims

The C-HR+ comes in three trims: Icon, Design, and Excel. All models feature front-wheel drive. The Icon boasts a 57.7kWh battery with a range of up to 284 miles, while the Design and Excel trims step up to a 77kWh battery, extending the range to an impressive 376 miles.

Pricing starts at £32,995 (after the £1,500 government grant). The Icon trim includes a 14-inch infotainment screen, heated steering wheel, and 18-inch alloy wheels as standard.
The Design trim adds a power tailgate and rear privacy glass, with optional 20-inch alloys available.
The Excel trim goes further, including a 22kW onboard charger (compared to 11kW in other models), power driver’s seat adjustment, and synthetic suede upholstery.

Extended Battery Warranty and Reliability

Toyota is raising the bar for long-term ownership confidence with the C-HR+. The battery warranty has been extended to an industry-leading one million miles or 10 years – whichever comes first. This commitment to durability is backed by Toyota’s standard 10-year manufacturer’s warranty, provided annual servicing is maintained at a Toyota dealership.

This move addresses a major concern for EV buyers: long-term battery health and residual value. Toyota believes this extended warranty will appeal to customers who plan to keep their vehicles for the long haul.

Driving Experience and Interior Space

The C-HR+ is noticeably larger than its hybrid counterpart, offering improved cabin space. The rear seats comfortably accommodate two adults, with the option of squeezing in a third. The 416-liter boot expands to 1,207 liters with the rear seats folded down, though there is no additional storage in the front trunk.

The driving experience prioritizes comfort over performance, with well-tuned suspension absorbing road imperfections effectively. Acceleration is brisk, with a 0-62mph time of 7.3 seconds. Regenerative braking is adjustable via steering wheel-mounted paddles, allowing drivers to recapture energy efficiently and extend range.

Real-World Range and Competition

While Toyota claims up to 376 miles of range, real-world efficiency depends on driving conditions. A day of mixed driving suggests a more realistic range of around 300 miles. However, urban driving can improve efficiency significantly.

The C-HR+ competes with other electric SUVs such as the Kia EV3, Skoda Elroq, Hyundai Kona, BYD Atto 3, and Peugeot E-3008.

The Toyota C-HR+ balances practicality, reliability, and comfort, making it a compelling choice in the growing EV SUV segment. Its extended warranty and refined driving experience distinguish it from competitors.
