Isuzu D-Max Race Truck: Performance at a Surprisingly Low Price

Isuzu Thailand has unveiled a high-performance D-Max race truck designed for a new one-make series, and it’s being offered for sale at a price point that undercuts its actual production cost. Only 15 units will be built, making this a limited-run opportunity for serious drivers. The move is a calculated strategy to populate the racing series with competitive entries.

Aggressive Aerodynamics and Weight Reduction

The race-spec D-Max boasts extensive aerodynamic upgrades from Tera Engineering. These include an adjustable rear wing with a central fin, a rear diffuser, and functional vents in wider fenders. The truck has been stripped of non-essential weight, fitted with an FIA-spec roll cage, a single racing bucket seat, and a custom steering wheel with integrated controls. Even the infotainment screen has been repurposed to display real-time vehicle telemetry. Notably, the truck retains its extended cab layout with rear-hinged doors.

Enhanced Engine and Suspension

Under the hood is a modified 2.2-liter Ddi MaxForce turbodiesel engine now producing 281 horsepower (210 kW) and 507 Nm of torque – a significant increase over the standard road-going D-Max. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a stock manual gearbox and a high-performance clutch. The suspension has been upgraded with Penske adjustable dampers, and the chassis reinforced to handle track use. Ferodo six-piston front and four-piston rear brakes with thermal indicators ensure reliable stopping power.

Subsidized Pricing and Race Series Entry

Each race truck is priced at ฿1,490,000 ($46,200), despite development costs exceeding ฿1,700,000 ($52,700) per unit. Isuzu is essentially subsidizing the entry fee into its new racing series, which is scheduled to include three events in June, August, and October of 2026. However, buyers should note that this vehicle is not street legal and will require a trailer for transport.

Alternative: The Sporty D-Max X-Series

For those seeking a more versatile option, Isuzu also offers the D-Max X-Series in Speed and Hi-Lander trims. These variants deliver 161 horsepower (120 kW) and 400 Nm of torque, featuring distinctive styling cues like a red-accented grille, aero add-ons, and black alloy wheels. The X-Series is priced between ฿768,000 ($23,700) and ฿1,041,000 ($32,200).

Isuzu’s move to offer the race truck at below-cost is a strategic decision to jumpstart its new racing series and ensure competitive participation. This aggressive pricing model highlights the company’s commitment to motorsport.
