Morgan is shifting its traditional formula. While the brand has historically focused on lightweight, visceral driving experiences rather than raw horsepower, the new Supersport 400 signals a bold move toward high-performance power. This new flagship is not only the most powerful Morgan ever produced but also the most expensive.
A Significant Leap in Performance
The “400” in its name refers to a substantial increase in output. Compared to the standard Supersport, which delivers 335bhp, the new model boasts 402bhp and 500Nm of torque.
To achieve this, Morgan utilizes a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine sourced from BMW—the same powerplant found in performance-oriented models like the BMW Z4 M40i and the Toyota Supra. To complement the increased power, Morgan has introduced an “Active Performance Exhaust System,” designed to provide a more aggressive and vocal acoustic experience.
Enhanced Handling and Engineering
Power is nothing without control, and Morgan has addressed this by making several high-end technical upgrades standard on the 400 model:
- Dynamic Handling Pack: Unlike the standard Supersport where this is an option, the 400 comes standard with adjustable front and rear coilovers, featuring custom valving and spring rates.
- Revised Geometry: The suspension geometry and damping have been recalibrated to improve cornering stability.
- Lightweight Components: The car features new, lighter 19-inch Sportlite forged alloy wheels, available in mid-silver or an optional Dark Bronze.
- Aerodynamics: The bodywork has been refined with functional upper vents on the front wings to assist with airflow and cooling.
Refined Luxury and Bespoke Details
Inside, Morgan maintains its signature blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern luxury. The cabin features full leather upholstery paired with dark wood grain on the center console and doors. However, the 400 introduces more customization through Alcantara options and a unique stitch pattern found throughout the interior.
One notable change addresses a previous criticism of the brand’s interior cohesion. While the standard Supersport uses a modern BMW-style gear selector, the 400 offers an exclusive optional aluminium gear selector, designed to better match Morgan’s classic aesthetic.
Market Positioning and Future Outlook
The price tag reflects the car’s elevated status. Starting at £112,965 (plus VAT), the Supersport 400 sits significantly higher than the £102,000 base Supersport. This premium pricing positions the vehicle in a highly competitive niche of boutique, high-performance grand tourers.
This launch is more than just a single new model; it represents a strategic pivot for the company. Morgan has indicated that the Supersport 400 is the starting point for a “broader product programme,” with various limited-run models expected to debut over the next 18 months.
The Supersport 400 marks Morgan’s evolution from a maker of charming, lightweight classics to a serious contender in the high-performance, luxury sports car market.
