Mercedes GLB Redesign: 7-Seat SUV with Both Electric and Gas Options

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the next-generation GLB, a versatile SUV designed to stand out in a crowded market. The vehicle offers a rare combination of seven-seat capacity, premium features, and a choice between traditional internal combustion engines (ICE) and a fully electric powertrain.

Key Features and Architecture

The new GLB is built on Mercedes’ Modular MMA platform, the same architecture that underpins the CLA. This allows for both EV and hybrid models, making it unique among competitors. It is also the largest vehicle to be built on this MMA platform, with the smaller GLA crossover following in 2025. The GLB is designed to fill a niche, as it is currently the only premium SUV in its class offering both seven seats and a choice of power options.

Competition and Pricing

While the GLB is positioned uniquely, it still faces competition from models like the Tesla Model Y, Audi Q4 E-tron, and Volkswagen ID 4. Other seven-seat EVs exist, but they either come at a much lower price (Peugeot e-5008) or are significantly more expensive (Volvo EX90, Kia EV9). The new GLB is expected to launch in early 2026, with an estimated starting price of around £41,000 for the ICE version and just under £50,000 for the electric variant. This represents a roughly £2,000 premium over the equivalent CLA Shooting Brake.

Why This Matters

The GLB’s redesign is important because it addresses a growing demand for versatile, family-friendly SUVs. The availability of both electric and gas powertrains allows Mercedes to appeal to a wider range of buyers, including those who may not yet be ready to fully commit to an EV. The seven-seat configuration is also a significant advantage, as many premium SUVs in this segment offer only five seats.

The GLB’s unique position in the market — combining seven seats with both EV and ICE options — could make it a strong contender in the premium SUV space.

The GLB’s launch in 2026 will be a key test of whether this strategy pays off.
