Great Wall Motor (GWM) aims to make a splash in the increasingly crowded electric SUV market with its latest offering, the Ora 5. This compact SUV officially opened for pre-sale on November 12th, boasting an intriguing blend of retro aesthetics and advanced technology. Priced competitively starting at around $15,400 USD, the Ora 5 will need to stand out amongst established players like BYD and Tesla.
The Ora 5 distinguishes itself with its charmingly unconventional design, embracing a “cute and retro” aesthetic that has proven popular in recent years for EVs. Measuring 4,471mm long, 1,833mm wide, and 1,641mm tall, it sits comfortably within the compact SUV segment, offering practicality while retaining a distinct visual appeal.
GWM offers five trim levels, spanning two battery options: 45.3kWh for a CLTC range of 480km (298 miles) or 58.3kWh for a more extended 580km (360 miles). Power comes from a single electric motor delivering 150kW (201 hp), providing spirited performance within its class.
While all trims feature standard safety equipment and driver assistance systems, the high-end models take it a step further with an integrated roof lidar sensor. This addition bolsters GWM’s “Coffee Pilot Ultra” system, enabling advanced driving features such as highway and urban Navigation on Autopilot (NOA), plus automated parking assistance.
The interior prioritizes a minimalist aesthetic with a clear focus on technology integration. An intuitive 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster pairs with a large 15.6-inch 2.5K floating central control screen, housed within the dashboard.
This user interface is powered by GWM’s third-generation Coffee OS platform, which incorporates DeepSeek’s advanced large language AI model and is driven by MediaTek’s powerful 4nm cockpit chip. This combination promises a responsive and intelligent in-car experience. Physical toggle switches for climate controls are conveniently placed below the air vents, providing tactile feedback alongside the touchscreen interface.
Additional features aimed at enhancing driver comfort include wireless fast charging for mobile devices and a spacious 1.65m2 panoramic sunroof that floods the cabin with natural light.
The Ora 5 arrives in six different exterior colors: gray, green, blue, beige, red, and white, allowing buyers to personalize their vehicle.
By combining eye-catching retro styling with competitive pricing and increasingly sophisticated driver assistance technology, GWM hopes to carve out a successful niche for the Ora 5 within the rapidly evolving electric SUV landscape.
