Geely to Challenge Land Rover with Rugged New SUV in UK Market

Geely Auto is preparing to enter the UK market with a new, aggressively designed SUV positioned to compete directly with the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Dubbed the Galaxy Cruiser, the vehicle is nearing production readiness after debuting as a concept at last year’s Shanghai motor show.

Expansion Plans Confirmed

Yan Tianxiao, Geely Auto UK’s marketing boss, confirmed the company’s intention to launch the Galaxy Cruiser in the UK, though specific timing remains unconfirmed. Sales in China are anticipated to begin by year-end. The SUV will leverage Geely’s SEA-R platform, which also underpins the Zeekr 9X and the upcoming Lotus Eletre plug-in hybrid.

Off-Road Focus and Technology

The Galaxy Cruiser is designed to be highly capable off-road. Testing in the Chinese deserts exceeded initial expectations regarding its platform’s limits, according to design studio director Flavien Dachet. The concept vehicle showcases independent active suspension for enhanced grip, an 800mm wading depth, and steer- and brake-by-wire technology.

This vehicle isn’t just about luxury; it’s about pushing the boundaries of what an electric SUV can achieve in challenging terrain.

The SUV will also incorporate AI-assisted Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) to highlight potential hazards, though driver input remains the primary control.

Powertrain and Performance

Geely plans to equip the production model with a hybrid powertrain shared with the Zeekr 9X and Lotus Eletre, combining a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a 70kWh battery for up to 220 miles of electric range (based on the more lenient CLTC test cycle). The Galaxy Cruiser is expected to feature a four-wheel drive system with three electric motors, potentially delivering power outputs comparable to its Zeekr and Lotus counterparts – exceeding 900 bhp.

Why This Matters: Geely’s move signals an aggressive push into the premium SUV segment, challenging established players like Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz. The company’s confidence in the SEA-R platform’s off-road capabilities suggests it’s not simply another luxury vehicle but a serious contender for adventure enthusiasts. This expansion also reflects the growing trend of Chinese automakers targeting the European market with advanced, high-performance vehicles.
