Denza Z9 GT: BYD’s Electric Flagship Gets a Significant Upgrade

The Denza Z9 GT, a striking electric shooting brake from BYD’s premium sub-brand, has received a substantial power and range boost in China. Positioned as a direct competitor to the Porsche Taycan, the updated Z9 GT now offers performance figures that put it firmly in the high-end EV segment. While an Australian release remains unconfirmed, a teaser appearance on Denza Australia’s website suggests potential interest in bringing the model Down Under.

Enhanced Performance and Range

The most notable upgrade comes in the tri-motor electric variant, now producing 850kW – a significant jump from the previous 710kW. This configuration utilizes a 230kW front motor paired with dual 310kW rear motors, delivering blistering acceleration and performance. A rear-wheel drive version with 370kW is also available.

The electric range has also improved. The Z9 GT will now feature larger battery options, either a 102.326kWh or 122.496kWh unit, capable of achieving between 820km and 1036km under China’s CLTC testing standard. The previous model offered a maximum range of 630km from its 100.1kWh battery.

Plug-in Hybrid Gains Too

The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version has also been enhanced. It combines a 152kW 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with a 200kW front motor and dual 220kW rear motors, totaling 640kW. The PHEV now boasts a larger 63.8kWh battery (up from 38.5kWh), extending its electric-only range to 400km under CLTC, compared to the previous 201km.

Design and Tech Updates

Denza has also introduced a new exterior color option, Fjord Green, alongside subtle design tweaks. The LiDAR unit has been repositioned, and a blue indicator light now signals when the semi-autonomous driving system is active. The Z9 GT’s dimensions – 5195mm long, 1990mm wide, and 1490mm tall – make it larger than the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, particularly in wheelbase length.

The vehicle continues to offer high-end features like air suspension, Nappa leather interiors, a 26-speaker sound system, and even onboard fridges in select variants.

Market Implications

The Z9 GT’s aggressive pricing and performance could disrupt the premium EV market. In China, the car is positioned to compete directly with the Porsche Taycan, and if brought to Australia, it could offer a compelling alternative at a potentially lower price point. Denza’s current Australian lineup includes the B8 SUV, priced up to $97,990, suggesting the Z9 GT could fall within a similar bracket should it be confirmed for local sale.

The Denza Z9 GT’s upgrades underscore BYD’s ambition to establish itself as a serious player in the luxury EV space, challenging established brands with advanced technology and competitive pricing.
