Ram is bringing back the ProMaster City van for the 2027 model year, targeting a starting price under $40,000. This marks a significant shift for the brand, which discontinued the previous generation in 2022 due to slowing sales. The new ProMaster City isn’t just a revival; it’s a strategic move to fill a gap in the commercial vehicle segment, offering a mid-size option that sits between compact cargo vans and full-size workhorses.
Core Specifications and Performance
The 2027 ProMaster City is built on Stellantis’ K0 global commercial van platform – the same architecture underpinning models like the Citroën Dispatch and Opel Vivaro. This means a nearly identical vehicle to its European counterparts, with the key addition of Ram branding across the exterior.
Under the hood, a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine delivers 166 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. The engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and powers the front wheels only. Suspension is handled by a front MacPherson strut setup and a rear independent trailing-arm system.
Size and Utility
The ProMaster City measures just under 77 inches tall, making it suitable for most urban parking garages. The van boasts a 129.0-inch wheelbase and a tight 42-foot turning radius for easy maneuverability.
Inside, the ProMaster City offers over 167.1 cubic feet of cargo space, accommodating two US standard pallets, four-by-eight plywood sheets, and more. The load floor is 111.1 inches long, with 48 inches between the rear wheel wells and 54 inches of cargo height. Access is provided via 180-degree rear swing doors or a standard liftgate, along with a 36-by-48-inch passenger-side sliding door. The van is designed to carry over 2,000 pounds of payload, with Ram targeting a 2,000-lbs towing capacity.
Trims and Features
Ram will offer the ProMaster City in two trims: Tradesman and SLT. The Passenger Wagon can seat five to eight people.
The Tradesman trim includes standard forward collision warning, auto headlights, rear parking sensors, heated front seats, and a programmable speed limiter. A 10-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.0-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard.
The SLT trim adds a body-color front bumper with fog lights, a body-color rear bumper, dual-tone 17-inch wheels, front parking sensors, and a wireless phone charger. A heated steering wheel is available as an option.
Ram will offer the ProMaster City in 11 configurations—six window and six panel combinations with two rear access options. Six exterior colors will be available.
Production and Availability
The 2027 Ram ProMaster City will be manufactured in Turkey and is scheduled to go on sale in the first quarter of 2027. This decision reflects a broader industry trend of leveraging global platforms to streamline production and reduce costs.
The revival of the ProMaster City represents a calculated move by Ram to address a neglected segment of the commercial market. By offering a practical, mid-size van at a competitive price, Ram aims to capture a growing share of the business customer base who need more space than a compact van, but don’t require the bulk of a full-size model.
