Nissan has revealed the Aura NISMO RS concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon, showcasing a high-performance hybrid hatchback designed to validate future sporty models. The vehicle builds upon the standard Note Aura NISMO, amplifying its aggressive styling and performance through a wider body, enhanced aerodynamics, and a powerful dual-motor e-Power system.
Aggressive Design & Aerodynamic Enhancements
The Aura NISMO RS stands out with its dramatically flared fenders, extending the vehicle’s width by 5.7 inches. This aggressive stance is further emphasized by a lower ride height (0.8 inches lower than the standard NISMO) and aggressive aerodynamic elements.
These include an extreme front splitter, blade-like side skirts, a substantial rear diffuser, and a large roof-mounted spoiler. Nissan claims these additions reduce drag and improve downforce, complementing the Dark Matte NISMO Stealth Gray paint with red accents.
Hybrid Power: e-Power Unleashed
Under the hood, the concept features Nissan’s e-Power hybrid system, borrowed from the X-Trail NISMO (known as the Rogue in the U.S.). Unlike typical hybrids, e-Power uses the internal combustion engine solely to generate electricity, delivering power to the wheels through electric motors alone.
The Aura NISMO RS boasts a combined output of 335 horsepower from a 201-hp front e-motor and a 134-hp rear e-motor, powered by a 142-hp 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. This represents a significant upgrade over the standard NISMO model’s 149 hp.
Performance Upgrades & Future Prospects
To maximize handling, Nissan equipped the concept with high-grip tires and recalibrated its e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive system. Larger, four-piston brakes up front and two-piston brakes in the rear provide improved stopping power.
Nissan calls this a “technical validation exercise,” which suggests that it is testing the viability of high-performance hybrid models. While the Aura NISMO RS is likely to remain exclusive to Japan, the underlying e-Power technology is slated for a U.S. rollout, raising the possibility of future NISMO-branded performance variants in North America.
The Aura NISMO RS demonstrates Nissan’s commitment to hybrid performance, offering a glimpse into the potential for future sporty models in Japan and beyond.
