Porsche Reaffirms Electric 718 Sports Cars Despite ICE Return

Porsche has moved to quell rumors that its upcoming electric Boxster and Cayman models have been scrapped, even as the company explores options for reviving gasoline-powered versions of the sports cars. The clarification comes after speculation intensified following internal shifts in leadership and a surprising reversal in Porsche’s EV-only strategy.

Electric Sports Cars Still On Track

Despite delays, Porsche executives confirm the 718 EV duo remains a priority. Daniel Schmollinger, CEO of Porsche Cars Australia, stated that he has personally test-driven the electric prototypes and described the driving experience as “amazing,” emphasizing their go-kart-like handling and dynamic performance. The company has not yet announced a firm release date, but the project is not abandoned.

Combustion Engine Return Complicates Roadmap

The situation is complicated by Porsche’s decision to reintroduce internal combustion engines (ICE) in select 718 models. Reports indicate that Porsche may initially relaunch the gas-fueled 718 as an updated version of the older 982 generation, potentially with a hybridized flat-six engine borrowed from the 911 GTS. This would serve as a transitional step before the next-generation Boxster and Cayman arrive, possibly with ICE options alongside the EVs.

The possibility of modifying the PPE Sport platform — originally designed for EVs — to accommodate gasoline engines is also being evaluated, though no decisions have been finalized. Porsche leadership is conducting ongoing assessments every six months to determine future powertrain strategies.

Market Demand and Regulatory Hurdles

Porsche’s shift in strategy reflects a response to market demand, as the 718 models remained popular despite being discontinued in some regions due to cybersecurity regulations. The sports cars sold well in 2024 and 2025, with nearly 42,000 units moved across both years. However, adapting older platforms to meet modern emissions standards will take time. A full ICE revival is not expected before 2028, with next-generation models likely arriving later in the decade.

Audi’s Contrasting Approach

In contrast to Porsche’s flexibility, Audi remains committed to an all-electric drivetrain for its Concept C sports car, which shares technical underpinnings with the 718 EV. Despite rumors of cancellation, Audi has also confirmed that the Concept C is still in development.

Porsche is attempting to balance the demand for traditional sports car dynamics with the push for electric innovation, creating a complex but potentially profitable roadmap.
