You think about it while carving through a twisty road. The asphalt is rough. Your body is moving. Logic suggests that padding and rigid carbon-fiber rods would help. They must. But then the counter-argument hits. Can modern body armor actually save you? A helmet is non-negotiable. Everyone knows that. But what else?

Wouldn’t you be better off staying light? Unencumbered? You could maneuver faster. Avoid the crash entirely. Relying on a heavy exoskeleton that overheats and restricts motion feels like a bad trade. Especially if that armor does nothing anyway.

The data behind motorcycle protective clothing

The go-to source for this armor discussion is a 2006 paper titled “The Injury Reduction Benefits of Motorcycle Protective Clothing.” It was presented to the National Transportation Safety Board at the Motorcycle Safety Forum in Sydney, Australia. The conclusion is blunt. Protective clothing cannot prevent injuries in a high-impact crash. Those speeds are too fast. Most motorcycle crashes don’t occur at high speed.

That is the key distinction. A recent report nicknamed MAIDS (Motorcycle Accident In-Depth Study) found that 75 percent of all motorcycle crashes take place at speeds slower than 35 miles (56.3 kilometers) per hour. At these lower speeds, body armor or other protective clothing can mean the difference between walking away and being carried to the ER.

The numbers don’t lie. Riders who wear leathers spend an average of seven days less in the hospital. They return to work on average 20 days earlier than riders who crashed without leathers. That is a massive reduction in downtime. With the MAIDS study finding that 40 percent of crashes result in skidding without further impact, that is another tally in the pro armor column.

Skidding is brutal. Road rash is not a joke. Armor has been proven to reduce the severity of lower-body injuries. Pipe burns. Chipped elbows and knees. These are common. They are detrimental. They are worth preventing.

In short, motorcycle body armor reduces injury. The logic is sound. The data is clear. You stay comfortable. You stay safe. The rest is just noise.
