High-Revving Four-Cylinder Engine Reaches 10,000 RPM

The pursuit of automotive performance often prioritizes displacement—large engines delivering raw power. However, there’s a distinct and compelling appeal in the opposite approach: small, high-revving engines that extract maximum output through precision engineering. Boreham Motorworks’ new 2.1-liter four-cylinder exemplifies this philosophy, pushing the boundaries of naturally aspirated engine technology.

The Ten-K Engine: A Revolution in Compact Power

Boreham Motorworks’ latest powerplant, dubbed the “Ten-K,” is designed for its modern Ford Escort RS revival. After extensive development, the engine delivers an astonishing 325 horsepower at a staggering 10,000 rpm. This translates to a specific output exceeding 155 hp per liter, a figure typically reserved for forced-induction or much larger displacement engines.

This output is remarkable. For comparison, Porsche’s renowned 4.0-liter flat-six in the 911 GT3 RS, known for its own engineering excellence, peaks at 9,000 rpm and produces 126 hp per liter. The Ten-K surpasses this benchmark with a smaller displacement and naturally aspirated configuration.

Engineering Behind the Numbers

The Ten-K’s performance isn’t just about high revs; it’s the result of meticulous engineering. Key features include individual throttle bodies for precise airflow control, a billet steel crankshaft for durability at extreme speeds, forged connecting rods for strength, and a high-flow 16-valve cylinder head. The engine also weighs only 188 pounds (85 kilograms), minimizing rotational inertia and further enhancing its responsiveness.

Power is transferred through a five-speed manual transmission with a dogleg shift pattern, designed for both performance and driver engagement.

Beyond the Ten-K: A Balanced Approach

Boreham will also offer a more accessible version of the Escort RS with an upgraded version of the original Twin-Cam four-cylinder. Enlarged to 1.845 liters and fitted with modern fuel injection, this engine produces 182 horsepower. It’s paired with a four-speed straight-cut manual gearbox.

Reborn Icon: A Lightweight Chassis

The new Escort RS isn’t merely a restomod but a fully rebuilt vehicle with all-new components. The body panels are constructed from steel, while the hood, trunk lid, and select interior elements utilize carbon fiber for weight reduction.

The target weight of just 1,763 pounds (800 kilograms) will ensure exceptional agility and responsiveness, aligning with the engine’s high-revving nature.

Exclusivity and Price Point

Production will be limited to 150 units, each priced around £295,000 (approximately $390,000). This exclusivity reflects the engineering, craftsmanship, and performance inherent in the reborn Escort RS.

The Boreham Motorworks Escort RS is not just a car; it’s a statement—a blend of classic heritage and modern, uncompromising performance. Its high-revving engine and lightweight construction promise a driving experience that few vehicles can match.
