It wasn’t hard to see what was coming. President Donald Trump just granted pardons to nine folks convicted of messing with diesel emissions systems. He framed it as simple vehicle repair. The administration framed it as environmental crime. Now they go free.
He took to Truth Social for the announcement. The message was blunt.
I AM SETTING THEM ALL FREE.
Trump called the original convictions the work of “Weaponization and Stupidity.” He claimed these nine individuals were persecuted by the Biden Administration for merely fixing their trucks. That is a generous reading of the facts, certainly.
These weren’t just hobbyists tinkering in garages. They were mechanics and shop owners. They installed hardware and software to disable pollution controls mandated by the Clean Air Act. Prosecutors argued this let diesel trucks operate without required equipment. That creates smog. Lots of it.
Mackenzie Spurlock from Alaska is among those pardoned. His supporters had a specific defense. Cold weather wrecks emissions systems in places like Alaska. Maintenance costs spike. Performance tanks when faults trigger. It wasn’t always about wanting to “roll coal” for the thrill. Sometimes it was just about getting the truck to run when it’s forty below.
But there is money in it too. Big money.
Look at Aaron Rudolf. His business, Rudy Performance Parts, faced a $10 million fine in 2024 before the pardon wave. Court records show these companies made a killing selling tuning kits.
Here are the other names getting a fresh start:
– Matthew Geouge
– Ryan Lalone
– Wade Lalone
– Tim Clancy
– Joshua Davis
– Barry Pierce
– Jonathan Achtemeier
This fits a pattern. The Trump administration stopped criminal prosecutions for diesel defeat device users and distributors earlier this year. Civil enforcement is still on the table. The guns were put down, at least for prison time.
People aren’t happy. Critics say these pollutants cause real health issues. Asthma. Lung disease. They argue weakening enforcement undoes decades of air quality progress. Is clean air a political issue now? Apparently it is.
You look at Spurlock and see a mechanic fighting a losing battle with regs in a harsh climate. You look at Rudy Performance Parts and see a business model built on bypassing safety nets. Which lens do you use depends entirely on where you sit.
The signal is sent. Diesel tuning is political now. Whether your engine breathes clean or not seems less about science these days and more about who is in the White House. The law changed hands again.
