MG Motor UK is preparing to release a new entry-level electric vehicle (EV), the MG 2, aimed directly at the affordable end of the market. The car, designed in the UK, is slated for launch by 2027 with a target price of under £25,000. This move is a direct response to the growing demand for smaller, more accessible EVs, exemplified by the success of models like the Renault 5.
Filling a Gap in the EV Market
The MG 2 will slot in below the existing MG 4 EV as the brand’s most affordable electric offering. This will expand MG’s EV lineup to seven models, including the recently added S5 and S6 EVs. According to David Allison, MG Motor UK boss, the MG 2 is a logical progression for the company.
“It’s the obvious area of the market that’s next to happen… we will absolutely be in there.”
The decision follows increased competition in the sub-£20,000 EV segment, with brands such as Dacia and Leapmotors vying for market share. However, MG plans to position itself as a value leader rather than solely chasing the lowest price point.
Value over Cheapest Price
Allison emphasized that MG’s strategy is focused on delivering maximum value for money, rather than simply undercutting competitors. The company aims to replicate the success of the ZS, which offers the size of a Nissan Qashqai at the price point of a Nissan Juke.
Technical Specs and Design
The MG 2 will be built using the same SAIC Modular Scalable Platform as the MG 4. While specific details remain scarce, MG is already working on advanced concepts and prototypes, suggesting testing could begin soon. The company is likely to benchmark the MG 2 against the Renault 5, which features a 150bhp motor and a 250-mile range from its 52kWh battery.
Market Response and Future Outlook
The success of the Renault 5 has underscored the demand for affordable small EVs in Europe. Allison believes that downsizing is the most practical way to make EVs accessible as the continent shifts toward electric mobility.
The MG 2’s launch will be a crucial step in catering to this growing demand, offering consumers a budget-friendly EV option with a focus on practicality and value.
