Tesla Model Y Six-Seater Approved for Right-Hand Drive Markets

Tesla’s popular Model Y electric SUV is moving closer to a more practical configuration: a six-seat variant. Recent approvals in Australia for right-hand drive versions increase the likelihood of the extended Model Y reaching the UK market. This development comes as Tesla expands its lineup with more accessible base models (like the Rear-Wheel Drive versions) while keeping premium options like the Cybertruck exclusive to certain regions.

Expanding Family Options

The six-seat Model Y, previously leaked as the ‘Model Y L’ in China, addresses a gap in Tesla’s offerings. While the Model X provides seven-seat capability (available used for under £20,000), the new variant offers a more affordable and compact alternative for larger families. The seating arrangement is expected to be 2-2-2, providing dedicated third-row access.

Key Specifications and Changes

The six-seat Model Y is notably longer than the standard version, measuring 4,969mm compared to the regular 4,792mm. The wheelbase has been extended by 150mm, contributing to more legroom in the rear. Height is also increased, from 1,624mm to 1,668mm, accommodating third-row headroom without compromising the vehicle’s overall profile.

Exterior changes include a new 19-inch wheel design, a revised boot spoiler, and an exclusive gold paint option. The bootlid has been redesigned to maximize rear passenger space.

Performance and Weight Considerations

The Chinese patent filings suggest a dual-motor powertrain capable of 455bhp, exceeding the current UK AWD model’s 375bhp. However, the extended wheelbase adds weight – 2,088kg compared to the standard car’s 1,997kg. This increased mass may slightly impact efficiency and acceleration, but Tesla’s focus remains on providing a more versatile family vehicle.

The approval for right-hand drive markets signifies a strategic move by Tesla to cater to broader consumer needs. The six-seat Model Y is poised to become a compelling option for families seeking an electric SUV with increased practicality.
