Mercedes-Benz is bringing back the iconic G-Class Cabriolet, marking the return of an open-top version of the rugged off-roader after nearly ten years. The revival was confirmed with the release of official test images showing the vehicle undergoing rigorous trials in Austria, with further cold-weather testing planned for Sweden.
Engine Options and Performance
The new G-Class Cabriolet will utilize internal combustion engines (ICE) rather than the fully electric EQ platform. This means buyers will have a choice of powerplants:
- G450d: A turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six diesel engine producing 362bhp.
- G500: Another turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder, but this time petrol-powered, delivering 443bhp.
- G63: A high-performance variant with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 generating a substantial 577bhp.
These engine options ensure that the Cabriolet retains the G-Class’s reputation for robust performance both on and off the road.
Market Availability and Timing
Mercedes-Benz plans to offer the G-Class Cabriolet globally, including the United States for the first time. This expansion is significant, as the US market has long been a major consumer of luxury off-road vehicles.
The company has not yet announced a firm launch date, but given the advanced stage of testing, a release coinciding with the start of the European summer season seems likely. This timing would align perfectly with demand for open-top vehicles during warmer months.
Why This Matters
The G-Class Cabriolet’s return represents a strategic move by Mercedes-Benz to cater to a specific niche: buyers who want the prestige and off-road capability of the G-Class, combined with the open-air experience of a convertible.
The revival signals that even in an era of electrification, there remains a strong demand for high-end, gasoline-powered vehicles with a distinct brand identity.
Mercedes-Benz is tapping into this demand by expanding the G-Class portfolio, reinforcing its position as a luxury off-road icon.
