Kia Considers Sub-$25K Electric City Car, Aims for European Market

Kia is actively evaluating the feasibility of a new electric city car, potentially named the “EV1,” to complement its existing petrol-powered Picanto. This move signals the automaker’s commitment to making electric vehicles more accessible and boosting sales in Europe. The company’s European marketing chief, David Hilbert, confirmed that Kia is “continuing to study opportunities” in the small EV segment.

The Rise of Affordable EVs

The push for affordable electric vehicles is growing. Kia CEO Ho Sung Song previously stated that the company is already working on designs for a sub-€25,000 ($22,000) electric city car. If realized, this model would compete directly with upcoming EVs like the Renault Twingo and Volkswagen ID 1.

The EV1, if approved, would likely be sold exclusively in Europe due to its compact size. It would reinforce Kia’s strategy of expanding its presence in a market where demand for smaller, affordable EVs is rising. The company’s recent unveiling of the EV2 crossover, also designed for European markets, demonstrates this trend.

EU Regulations and Strategic Positioning

Kia is closely monitoring new EU regulations aimed at promoting affordable, locally-made small EVs. These “E-car” rules could offer advantages to both the EV2 (built in Slovakia) and any future EV1 model. The company has indicated it is prepared to adapt its product plans to align with the new standards.

According to Kia Europe’s planning boss, Alex Papapetropoulos, the firm is “looking very closely at what the EU was doing.” He added that Kia has “the toolkit that allows us to adjust and adapt” to upcoming regulations.

Beyond City Limits

While focused on urban driving, Kia’s EV2 crossover boasts a near-300-mile range, suggesting a broader utility beyond city commutes. The EV1 would likely follow suit, offering practicality without sacrificing range. Despite the interest in small EVs, the Picanto remains a key model for Kia, with strong sales volume confirming its continued importance.

Kia’s strategic focus on accessible EVs and adaptation to EU regulations positions it well for future growth in the European automotive market.

The EV1 is expected to arrive before the end of the decade, marking another step in Kia’s plan to meet its ambitious European sales targets.
