Ford is once again accepting applications for the high-performance Mustang GTD, starting April 17th – a fitting date, given it’s the pony car’s 62nd anniversary. However, prospective buyers should prepare for fierce competition, as demand for the track-focused machine remains substantial.
Application Process Remains Opaque
Details regarding the application process are scarce. Ford directs interested parties to a generic email signup on their website, with no direct application form currently available. Those who register will receive a reminder from the “Mustang GTD Concierge team” before applications officially open. Selected buyers will then be contacted with purchase details.
Production Through 2029
The company has clarified that this round of applications covers production for the 2027, 2028, and 2029 model years. This indicates continued commitment to the GTD, despite its high price tag and the emergence of formidable rivals.
Performance and Pricing: A Competitive Landscape
The Mustang GTD boasts an impressive 815 horsepower from its supercharged 5.2-liter V8, enabling a 202 mph top speed and a 6:52.072 Nürburgring lap time. Yet, the car faces stiff competition. The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 lapped the Nürburgring in 6:50.763, and the ZR1X even faster at 6:49.275.
More crucially, the ZR1 is $140,000 cheaper at $185,000, while the ZR1X undercuts the Mustang by $115,300 at $209,700. The GTD previously started around $325,000, and prices may increase for future model years.
Despite the competition and high cost, the Mustang GTD remains a desirable vehicle for enthusiasts seeking extreme performance and exclusivity. The reopening of applications suggests Ford believes there’s still significant demand at this price point.
