Subaru Revives Rally Spirit with Limited-Edition WRX Club Spec Evo

The Subaru WRX STI is no longer sold in many markets, including the UK and Europe, but enthusiasts in Australia can now purchase a new model that closely resembles the iconic rally-inspired saloon: the WRX AWD Club Spec Evo. This special edition builds on the existing WRX, not available in Europe, and features significant upgrades to mimic the classic STI.

Distinctive Styling and Performance

The Club Spec Evo stands out with its unique Sunrise Yellow paint, reminiscent of the STI Spec C models from the early 2000s. It also includes matte-finish 19-inch alloy wheels, a high-mounted rear wing, and contrast stitching in the interior. Under the hood is Subaru’s turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four engine, paired with a six-speed manual transmission, delivering 270 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. This setup allows for a 0-62 mph acceleration time of approximately 6.5 seconds.

STI-Inspired Upgrades

The Club Spec Evo draws heavily from the Australian-market WRX Ts Spec B model, incorporating features familiar to fans of older STI versions. These include a locking rear differential, Brembo brakes, Recaro seats, and adaptive suspension. These enhancements improve handling and performance, bringing the Club Spec Evo closer to the spirit of the original STI.

Why This Matters

The WRX STI’s disappearance from many markets is due to increasingly strict emissions regulations and competition from faster hot hatchbacks. However, in markets like Australia and the US, where the car retains a loyal following, models like the Club Spec Evo keep the old-school charm of Subaru’s rally heritage alive.

“The WRX Club Spec Evo is a reminder that some automakers still value performance and enthusiast appeal over strict market trends.”

Limited Availability and Price

Only 75 units of the WRX Club Spec Evo will be produced, exclusively for the Australian market. The price is around £33,500 at current exchange rates, a throwback to the pricing of performance cars in the 1990s. This limited run and retro-inspired price point emphasize the model’s appeal to enthusiasts who appreciate a nostalgic nod to Subaru’s rally legacy.
