Mercedes-Benz is preparing to relaunch the G-Class Cabriolet, marking a significant return for the open-top variant after years of availability only in hard-top configurations. This revival will feature a distinctive four-door design, a departure from the traditional two-door soft-top models previously offered.
A New Era for the G-Class Convertible
The upcoming G-Class Cabriolet will be powered by a petrol engine rather than the electric EQ Technology version introduced last year. This decision aligns with the desire to maintain the classic G-Class driving experience while offering the luxury of open-air motoring.
Expanding on Past Models
Previous G-Class convertibles were typically short-wheelbase, two-door models. The current generation saw only a long-wheelbase variant, with only a few extremely expensive “Landaulet” versions offering an open-top experience. The new Cabriolet bridges this gap, bringing the luxury of a four-door design to the convertible segment.
Design and Practicality
The vehicle will feature a traditional canvas roof operated electronically. While the exact mechanics remain to be seen, it’s expected that the roof will fold neatly over the spare wheel cover, though accommodating the canopy over front occupants may require some engineering adjustments. There will likely be some reduction in boot space and rear seating to make room for the folding mechanism.
Performance and Pricing
Mercedes-Benz is expected to offer a range of engine options, with the high-performance G 63 AMG’s V8 engine likely leading the lineup. The prototype shown confirms this by the presence of a rear differential, which the electric model does not have. Pricing will exceed that of the hard-top G-Class, starting well above £150,000, though it will remain significantly below the £600,000 price tag of the ultra-exclusive Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet.
The G-Class Cabriolet represents a unique fusion of luxury, off-road capability, and open-air enjoyment. This model caters to buyers who desire exclusivity and a statement vehicle without the extreme cost of limited-edition variants.
