Mercedes-Benz is preparing a significant update for its CLE coupe and convertible models, slated for release in late 2026 or early 2027. The refresh will include a controversial new grille design, mirroring the aesthetic introduced on the GLC, and notably, the reintroduction of a V8 engine for high-performance variants.
Design Overhaul: A New Front Face
Test vehicles reveal substantial changes hidden beneath camouflage. The most striking update is the front grille, which will adopt a larger, lower-set design extending to the bumper’s base. This contrasts with the current CLE’s grille, offering a bolder look aligned with newer Mercedes models. Headlights will also be redesigned, integrating the brand’s signature three-pointed star lighting.
Unlike the fully illuminated grilles seen on electric Mercedes vehicles, the CLE’s grille will remain open to accommodate airflow for combustion engines. This confirms the continued use of traditional powertrains alongside potential hybrid options.
Performance Boost: The Return of the V8
The most significant addition to the updated CLE lineup will be a V8 engine option, marking its first appearance in this model series. Mercedes-AMG is expected to offer a CLE 63 variant powered by a full-performance V8, addressing criticism that the current CLE 53’s six-cylinder mild-hybrid engine lacks the power and appeal of previous AMG flagships.
This move directly challenges the BMW M4 Competition, reasserting Mercedes-AMG’s commitment to high-performance coupes. The convertible variant will also receive the same updates, ensuring parity across both body styles.
The updated CLE will continue to compete in the mid-size coupe segment against rivals like the BMW 4 Series, with the CLE 63 AMG specifically targeting the M4 Competition’s performance level. The introduction of a V8 engine underscores Mercedes-Benz’s strategic response to market demands for more potent and engaging driving experiences.
