Mercedes-AMG is set to significantly update the front fascia of the SL roadster with a larger, more prominent grille as part of a mid-cycle refresh for the 2027 model year. The redesign aligns with the brand’s recent design direction, emphasizing larger grilles across its lineup, as seen in the GLC EV and upcoming C-Class EV.
Exterior Updates
The most noticeable change is the deepened grille, which now extends below the license plate—a departure from the current model’s design. This adjustment necessitates reshaping the entire front bumper assembly, with redesigned side air intakes partially obscured by camouflage on prototype vehicles. While the headlights appear unchanged, the final production model will feature updated daytime running light (DRL) graphics. Similar revisions are expected for the rear of the vehicle.
Engine Options and Performance
Mercedes-AMG will continue to offer a range of engine options, including the existing 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 in the SL63, which currently produces 577 horsepower (585 PS). The SL55 will retain its 470-horsepower (477 PS) output. The 2.0-liter inline-four engine in the SL43, generating 416 horsepower (422 PS), will also remain available. Additionally, the high-performance SL 63 S E Performance PHEV, with its 805-horsepower (816 PS) hybrid V8, will continue in the lineup. The Maybach-trimmed SL, offering a softer suspension and the SL63’s engine, will also be maintained.
Interior Enhancements
Despite expectations of a pillar-to-pillar digital display, similar to the latest CLA and GLC models, the interior of the 2027 SL will retain the existing center-mounted tablet display. This suggests Mercedes-AMG is prioritizing evolutionary updates over a complete interior overhaul.
The grille redesign reflects a broader trend within Mercedes-Benz to emphasize bolder front-end designs, increasing brand recognition and visual impact. The 2027 SL update is expected to hit showrooms next year, offering a refreshed look while maintaining the model’s core performance and luxury characteristics
