Ten years ago, thirty thousand pounds felt like serious cash. You could buy a premium saloon. A decent SUV. Whatever you wanted. Now? That sum barely touches a base-spec crossover. You get the small one. Maybe with a thousand left over for floor mats. No joy car in sight. Just the daily grind.
So we looked hard. We used the Auto Express Buy a Car search to find a solution. A three-car setup for under that magic £30k mark. It beats buying a single Nissan Qashqai, don’t you think? Here is what we found.
The City Runner
Hyundai Ioniq Electric – £9,745
Electric vehicles used to cost an arm and a leg. Not anymore. Depreciation has softened the blow. We found a 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric. 25,00 miles. £9,745. The 38kWh battery gives you about 190 miles range on paper. Reality is slightly less. But charging costs almost nothing. Three pounds tops at off-peak home rates. Eight pence a unit. It is dirt cheap. The steering is light. 134bhp gets you out of tight spots when you are late.
If you miss that one, the market has plenty.
Electric is no longer the poor man’s choice for long trips. It is the city king.
The Long-Haul Hauler
Vauxhall Insignia – £8,855
You need space. Really need it. The Vauxhall Insignia delivers. It is everywhere on the used market because fleets loved them. We found a 2,017 model. 49,00 miles. Just under £9k. The 2.0-litre diesels punch 172bhp. Over 56mpg. It can tow two tons without brakes. That is useful.
Don’t buy the basic spec. Go for the Elite Nav. Like ours. Dual-zone climate control. Parking sensors. Cruise control. The big stuff. The back seats are huge. The ride is plush. It feels like a car.
The Weekend Escape
Fiat 124 Spyder – £1,225
Forget the Mazda MX-5 for a moment. Everyone has one. They look the same. The Fiat 124 Spider looks Italian. Better, perhaps. We found a tidy 2,17. 2,250 miles. £1,125. The 1.4 petrol makes 140bhp. Seven seconds to 60. Fast enough. The manual gearbox adds drama. But it is the soft-top. Hand operated. Folds down in seconds. Wind in the hair.
It does not need to be an Abarth to be fun. The extra 30hp in the spicy version is nice but unnecessary. This is about feeling something.
What do you drive? The three cars cost roughly £30,668. Tight. But you have utility, efficiency, and a smidgeon of joy. All for the price of one sensible family car.
What would you add? Or swap out? The list is long. Your wallet is short.
