China’s GAC Motor is entering the Australian market with the Emzoom, a compact SUV positioned to compete with popular models like the Mazda CX-30 and Hyundai Kona. Launching this month, the Emzoom is arriving just ahead of stricter Euro 6d emissions standards, which come into effect in December 2025. This timing allows GAC to avoid immediate compliance hurdles, though future models will need to meet the tougher regulations by 2028.
Positioning and Specifications
The Emzoom, measuring over 4.4 meters in length, falls into the larger end of the small SUV segment, closer in size to the Nissan Qashqai than smaller rivals. It will be offered in a single ‘GL’ trim level. The vehicle is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 125kW and 270Nm, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. GAC claims shift times as low as 0.2 seconds.
Design and Interior Features
The Emzoom features a distinctive exterior design with GAC’s “Mecha Wing” grille and split LED headlights. Inside, a 14.6-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard, supporting wireless smartphone mirroring, seat ventilation, and climate control. Additional features include a panoramic sunroof, 50W wireless charging pad, and ambient interior lighting.
Safety and Technology
The Emzoom comes standard with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera, and blind-spot monitoring. It also includes six airbags and 12 radar sensors for enhanced safety.
Market Strategy
GAC’s launch strategy appears to capitalize on the window before stricter emissions standards take effect. By releasing the Emzoom now, the company avoids immediate compliance costs. The launch will also include the electric Aion V SUV and M8 PHEV people mover.
