The seventh-generation Subaru Outback is set to arrive in Australia in 2026, bringing a bolder design, updated technology, and a new focus on off-road capability with the introduction of the Wilderness sub-brand. The range sees price increases across the board, starting at $48,990 before on-road costs – a jump of $4,800 compared to the outgoing model.
New Wilderness Trim: Subaru’s Off-Road Focus
Subaru is expanding its SUV lineup with the Wilderness variants, a series designed to bridge the gap between standard models and high-performance STI trims, but for off-road use. Two Wilderness models will launch initially, replacing the previous turbo XT variants. These models feature a more powerful 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine producing 194kW and 382Nm of torque – only 8kW less than the WRX, with increased torque output.
The Wilderness trim also includes adaptive suspension, similar to that found in the WRX tS, enhancing ride comfort and off-road performance. Despite these upgrades, the Outback retains all-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with an eight-speed manual mode.
Updated Design and Technology
The 2026 Outback features a larger exterior profile with increased cargo space (roughly 10 liters more with the rear seats up and 30 liters with them down). Inside, a new 12.3-inch customizable digital instrument cluster is standard across all variants. The previous generation’s vertical 11.6-inch infotainment screen has been replaced with a more user-friendly 12.1-inch horizontal unit, bringing back physical buttons and knobs for climate control.
Wireless smartphone mirroring, dual-pinion steering (shared with the WRX and Forester), and a suite of active safety features, including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, and lane-keep assist, are also standard. Higher trims offer additional features like surround-view cameras and active lane-change assist.
Pricing and Trim Levels
The 2026 Outback range includes five variants, with the base AWD model starting at $48,990. The Wilderness trim begins at $59,690, a $2,200 increase over the outgoing top-spec Touring XT.
The engine options remain consistent with the previous generation: a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder (137kW, 245Nm) for the base models and the 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer for the Wilderness variants. While engine outputs are largely unchanged, the Wilderness offers improved performance and capability.
Servicing and Warranty
The 2026 Outback comes with Subaru’s standard five-year, unlimited-kilometer warranty and capped-price servicing. Service intervals are slightly longer for the Wilderness models.
Safety Features
The 2026 Outback includes a comprehensive suite of safety features, including nine airbags, Subaru EyeSight driver-assist technology, and new additions like a far-side airbag and driver monitoring system.
The new Subaru Outback represents a step forward in both design and off-road capability. With the addition of the Wilderness trim, Subaru is catering to drivers who demand more than just a comfortable daily commuter. The updated technology and larger interior make it a practical choice for families and adventurers alike.
